EPISODE 5, SERIES 2 (01/02/09)
FRIDAY FEBRUARY 06, 2009
Another high impact, action filled episode.
We were treated to our second helping of the new event – Rocketball. Tempest and Inferno were looking sensational mid-air. This event is great fun, we had a blast in training. It was one of the very few events where the male and female Glads could train against each other. The only downside is that the harnesses are extremely uncomfortable and rub in all the wrong places!
Earthquake has got to be one of my favourite events to watch this series, the new rules make it much more competitive and exciting. Strength and technique do certainly come into it, but winning seems to mainly depend on who wants it more. There have, however, been some disputable decisions and the ‘whoever hits the net first rule’ has come under scrutiny in the Gladiator green room.
Now for the science and a touch of Gladiator geekiness! One of the Glads (can’t remember who) got his physics thinking cap on and demonstrated to us all, using apples, that if two objects leave a platform, the momentum of the object creating the force (the attacker) combined with gravity, will create a rolling effect in the air, which leads to a likeliness that this attacking object will make contact with the ground (net) first. Battleaxe demonstrated this on Sunday, she was clearly the attacker and pushed Hannah off with ease, but Hannah cleverly held onto her and managed to get 5 points. Great comeback in the interview though BA! I think that in the event that both Gladiator and contender leave the platform, the decisions should be dependant on whoever is the ‘attacker’. It would be interesting to hear the viewer’s opinions, perhaps a blog on this topic?
Now, if you’re still reading after that little outburst of intellect... My final words go to the contenders who were eliminated this week. I take my Gladiator helmet off to Kelly, for coming on the show to set a good example to her daughter and unwittingly setting a great example to a million viewers in the UK too. It is so important that parents outline the importance of fitness to their children. Last, but by no means least, Mr Ronnie Williams! His outbursts had me amused, especially when squaring up to Wolf. It is true that he beat the Wolfman on the pyramid all those years ago, but Wolf was older then than Ronnie is now. It’s a shame he didn’t get a chance to take on one of the current Glads on the Pyramid, I wouldn’t have fancied his chances!!!!
