SERIES 1 REVIEW
MONDAY AUGUST 25, 2008
We've reached the end of the first series of the new Gladiators on Sky One, and what a series it has been! Nail-biting action, drama and tension, the revival of Gladiators has had it all and lived up to all expectations. I know everyone on the Gladiators Zone wants to send their congratulations to both Anna Miller and Simon Wray who are the well deserved winners of £100,00.
I was really pleased to see Panther keep her undefeated reign on the Duel platform. She has turned out to be such a legend and was so consistent throughout the entire series. Tempest has also done extremely well to keep a clean sheet on The Wall which is becoming one of her specialities.
The rivalry between Enigma and Contender Leanne Lennox in Gauntlet was great TV. Enigma had managed to hold Leanne back for around 20 seconds in the heats but in the Quarter Finals Leanne's false start and bad attitude was shocking! It was a shame that Enigma's injury in this performance made her miss the final episodes.
The introduction of Cyclone was another personal highlight, she really turned out to be a fantastic replacement and it was great seeing her on Hang Tough and Powerball. Hopefully we'll see her as a permanent addition to the Gladiators team next series.
The Big O has secured himself as the biggest and baddest character from the new team. He has come out with some classic lines, although to be fair Destroyer's sarcastic "I am smiling" comment he issued during Earthquake, was hilarious. Inferno has scowled at just about every Contender… scary! Atlas and Spartan have both proved themselves to be fan favourites and have shown true sportsmanship during their impressive performances.
My favourite Contender has had to be KT Coates. Her epic battle against Battleaxe on Hang Tough was another great memory from this series. I'm not sure how she managed to hold on with 14 stone of Battleaxe wrapped around her! A well deserved 10 points and a performance that will go down in Gladiator history.
It has been fantastic seeing Pyramid back in action. My favourite event has seen some serious rough and tumble and has kept me on the edge of my seat. Predator and Tornado have especially put in some impressive tackles throughout the series.
The series has also had its share of sad moments especially when Gavin Sunshine was injured and unable to complete the Eliminator. Another disappointment was when Kevin Dixon broke his arm in two places in Gauntlet during the Quarter Finals and had to leave the competition. It just goes to show how tough Gladiators really is! Ice had quite a harsh ruling from John Anderson during her final Hang Tough, personally I didn't think she deserved to be disqualified and I did feel quite sorry for her during her interview, but the referee's decision is final.
It has been fantastic to have Gladiators back on our television screens and I'm really looking forward to seeing what Series 2 brings…
