Gladiators Zone - Battleaxe, Shirley Webb

A weapon of war, domineering, aggressive and indomitable - a warrior queen.

Battleaxe is a former hammer thrower for Scotland and Great Britain. She has competed in the Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games, European Championships and World Championships and she holds the Scottish record. Battleaxe was previously a spring board and high board diver and a dancer, specialising in ballet, tap and modern. Battleaxe is also a mathematician, with a BSc in Mathematics from Edinburgh University.

What are your memories of the original series of Gladiators?
I loved it. All the family would be together on a Saturday to watch it and I'd run around the house in excitement. I wanted to be a Gladiator.

Who was your favourite Gladiator?
Hunter was my favourite and interestingly we've got a new Hunter look-a-like this time, with Atlas.

What qualities does a Gladiator need?
All the events challenge different parts of your body so you need various qualities - strength, stamina and agility.

What can the audience expect from Battleaxe?
A strong and powerful Gladiator who's fierce and tough. Battleaxe is the warrior queen of the Gladiators.

Who or what is your inspiration?
Anybody who's committed to something, whether it be sport or the arts. And through Gladiators I want to encourage children to get involved in an activity.

Which events are you most looking forward to?
The Gauntlet and Duel. I like the idea of the events being over water and although I love water, I won't be falling in.

If you were an animal what would you be?
If an ostrich could fly I'd quite like to be one of those, otherwise maybe a cheetah, because I'm fast, explosive and dynamic.
