THE WALL
OBJECTIVE
Contenders have to climb a 10m high wall, after 10 seconds for the men and 15 seconds for the women, the Gladiators chase them, trying to prevent them from reaching the top by pulling them off The Wall.
FACTS
The Wall was made a split event in 1997 (Series 6), although it appeared in full for all its 1998 (Series 7) appearances.
Over the years the Contenders were given a variety of head starts. Initially, the women got a 20 second headstart and the men 15 seconds. This was lowered in 1993 (Series 2). Often in Quarter Finals and Semi Finals the headstart was lowered even further.
In 1992 (Series 1) and the heats for 1993 (Series 2), 10 points were awarded to any Contender who reached the top. In the 1993 Quarter Finals this changed to 10 points for first Contender and 5 for second and this ruling was carried on until the finale in 1999 (Series 8).
Once in 1995 (Series 4), both female Contenders got over The Wall simultaneously and 10 points were awarded to both.
Contenders would receive 5 points for staying on The Wall for 60 seconds throughout the entire run of the show, although the last time this occurred was in Heat 1, 1995 (Series 4).
The Wall was in the opening show for every Series (as Event number two) with the exception of 1996 (Series 5) in which it debuted in Heat 2 (as Event number two).
The Wall was played in every show during 1993 (Series 2) except, strangely, the Final.
Despite being a core Event, The Wall only appeared in 3 Finals (1992, 1997, 1999), the latter two being as a split event only. However, it was played during two International Finals.
The Wall was only one of two Events to appear in all of the Celebrity Specials.
A re-run of The Wall was once played as a Contender claimed that the hand grip moved as he grabbed it.
In the 1994 Celebrity Special, Nightshade interviewed one of the losing Contenders. This was one of the only times a Gladiator conducted an interview in the Series.
Rebel was only defeated on The Wall once during her 4 years. Hunter was also only beaten once during his 7 years.
