JOUST
OBJECTIVE
Gladiator and Contender are sat astride sky bikes armed with a combat club. Holding on to the sky bike, each competitor tries to unseat the other using the combat club. The sky bikes vigorously twist, turn, swerve, rise, fall back and rotates, so a good sense of balance is needed.
FACTS
Joust was initially road tested at the 1993 Wembley Live shows, although the bikes were much bigger, with a padded seat and it was very close to the Arena floor. Furthermore, pugil sticks were used rather than the standard combat clubs.
In 1993-1994 (Series 2-3) the time limit in Joust was 30 seconds. This was expanded to 60 seconds during the Sheffield Live Shows in 1995.
Appearances of Joust declined during 1994 (Series 3) when during Heat 2, Contender Rachel Culwick sustained an injury while facing Scorpio.
In 1995 (Series 4) the sky bikes were revamped from metalic silver into a red sky bike (for the Contender) and a white sky bike (for the Gladiator). The undercarriage of each sky bike was also covered up.
A loss in this event would be accompanied by 'Another One Bites The Dust' by Queen.
